Believe it or not, your home may have poor indoor air quality, and you wouldn’t even know it. In fact, many traces of less than stellar “IAQ” are usually invisible to the human eye — unless you know what to look for.
Before searching high and low with a magnifying glass — as if you’re an IAQ-based private investigator — here are some things to consider if you feel your humble abode’s air has seen better days:
Signs of Poor Indoor Air Quality
Indoor Allergies
One of the most prominent signs of having poor indoor air quality is dealing with bouts of indoor allergies. In fact, if you suffer from seasonal allergies you’ll know that any form of allergies is not pleasant in the slightest.
If you feel as if your allergies are lingering around longer than they should, and worsen when you’re lounging around indoors, here’s what to look for:

Speaking of lingering allergens, how dusty would you say your home is? If you would consider it to be abnormally caked in dust and dander, there’s a chance — you guessed it — that your indoor air quality will need some improvement.
As it turns out, the reason your living space may be dustier than usual is that there could be a leaky air duct present. When this happens, any dust that may be residing in your ceiling will get sucked through the leak, allowing for that dust to be spread throughout your home with the cold air you’re seeking.
Another possibility this could be happening is that you may have an air filter that needs to be replaced. Typically, on average, you should consider replacing (or washing, if reusable) your filter about every 90 days to reap the benefit of fresh, clean air. Of course, if you have pets, you might want to replace it every 60 days or sooner.
Formation of Mold
Typically, when you have poor indoor air quality present in your home, you may notice the mold formation where it has never been spotted before. From the living room to the guest bedroom on the second floor, nothing is off-limits when it comes to this “pest.”
On average, this tends to happen when you have poor indoor air quality — simply because the humidity levels are unbalanced, which brings in extra moisture within your home. And if this problem persists, you’ll be breathing in mold, which is never a good thing.
Foul Smells
While on the topic of having mold present in your home, there’s a chance you may have a lingering smell wafting through the air — which is typically brought on by that “pest” we mentioned earlier.
