How Do Reverse Osmosis Filters Work?

Reverse osmosis water filters are capable of eliminating a vast number of contaminants through a combination of different filtering methods. Reverse osmosis (RO) systems are composed of 2-4 filters and a semipermeable membrane.

In all reverse osmosis systems you will find a sediment filter and carbon filter. The sediment filter is designed to remove contaminants like dirt, silt, rust, etc. The carbon filter is designed to remove things like chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, and other chemicals and volatile organic compounds that can be harmful or create unpleasant tastes and odors.

Both sediment and carbon filters can act as pre-filters or post-filters, meaning they can be used to filter water before or after it passes through the semipermeable membrane. Each system design is effective, but there is almost always a pre-filter application in order to remove contaminants that could damage the membrane. However, RO systems can include more than one sediment and/or carbon filter.

The semipermeable membrane is the most effective portion of the RO system and removes up to 98% of total dissolved solids. This membrane is layered and porous, and the pores are designed to physically prevent most dissolved substances from passing through, while still allowing water molecules to flow freely to the other side of the membrane.

The final layer in a reverse osmosis system is a polishing filter. The polishing filter is another carbon filter that puts the water through one additional filtering process to ensure that there are no contaminants present that may cause unpleasant flavors or odors.

The Process

The first step in reverse osmosis is the pre-filtering process. Once the water has been cleared of contaminants that could damage the membrane, the water is pushed through the reverse osmosis membrane so that microscopic particles can be removed.

After this stage, the water fills the storage tank. A storage tank keeps filtered water ready to use at a moment’s notice, thereby preventing the need to wait for the filtration process before using your water. Once the tank is full, the system will shut off.

Finally, when you’re ready to use your water and turn on the faucet, it will run through a polishing post-filter before clearing the tap.

Benefits of A Reverse Osmosis Filter System

There are many benefits of using a reverse osmosis filtration system, including:

  • Safer, cleaner drinking water for yourself and your family.
  • Your drinking water tastes better.
  • It saves you money on purchasing bottled water.
  • It’s better for the environment (no plastic water bottles filling up your garbage can).
  • RO systems are easy to maintain.
  • RO systems are compact and can fit under your kitchen sink.

The effectiveness and efficiency of reverse osmosis systems have made them one of the most popular types of water filters in the world. Since clean drinking water is so important to your health and wellbeing, investing in a reliable filter system can make a huge difference in your lifestyle and happiness.
