Is It Time for a New Heater?
As the years pass, your heater will eventually wear out and need to be replaced. Components in your heater can become corroded with exposure to air and moisture, electronic components wear out and become ineffective at doing their job, and your heater itself will eventually struggle to produce the heat you need to keep your home comfortable. When the time comes to replace your heater, Ponderosa Heating & Cooling, Plumbing & Electrical can help you choose the perfect replacement option and complete your installation or replacement service quickly and effectively.
You may need a new heater if any of the following are true:
- Your heater is more than 15 years old
- Your heater is no longer capable of effectively warming your home
- You’re spending a ton on energy to run your heater
- Your heater makes a ton of noise
Should I Invest in a High-Efficiency Heat Pump?
Heat pumps are quickly becoming the leading technology in in-home heating. Why is that? The answer has to do with the cost of energy and how much heat your heater can produce with that energy. Let’s look at some numbers—in order to produce one million BTUs of energy you would pay the following: $34.04 for a propane powered heater, $19.73 for an oil-burning furnace, $32.24 for an electric furnace, and just $16.12 for a high-efficiency heat pump.
Let’s look at it another way. Energy efficiency can also be defined by a measurement known as coefficient of performance, or COP. An electric furnace has a COP of 1, meaning every dollar spent on the electricity to operate the furnace produces one dollar’s worth of heat. On that same scale, a high-efficiency heat pump, can have a COP that reaches as high as 4. That means for every dollar you spend on energy, you will receive four dollars’ worth of heat. What does that mean in terms of your wallet? In the Bend, Oregon area, the yearly cost of operating an electric furnace can be reduced by anywhere from 30% to as much as 65% with the addition of a heat pump.
There are also financial benefits as well. Central Electric Co-operative and the State of Oregon have a combination of cash discounts and tax credits for homeowners who qualify for energy efficiency programs and rebates. With so many great perks and programs out there, it’s not hard to see that you can dramatically cut the cost of heating with electricity by adding a heat pump. This is why we are so strongly recommending electric heat pumps for homeowners everywhere.
